I've been thinking about what to do about the new TOS that LJ have put out. There are may extremely worrying things, but on reflection I rather think that a lot of it is quite similar to other TOS that we agree to without reading all the time.

Anyway, I've decided to start using Dreamwidth as well as Livejournal, and I'm trying to import all my previous posts in. It's taking bloody forever - is this usual? I have no idea. I'm going to try to check both sites and crosspost everything in future, so let's see how that goes. I don't really understand DW yet, and I don't know how to customise anything at all. I'm going to start trying to add people over here/there (depending where you're reading this!). If you're on LJ, come and say hi!
obliviateamores: (draco)
It has been over a year since I have posted anything on here. Wow. My life got busier and busier, plus a bit of weird, and various mental health problems. I have kind of been hiding in a virtual hole for a long time now due to those, and I want to start poking my head out again. So, I'm hopefully going to be posting a bit more, reading more, etc. etc., and generally come back to using LJ again after this break.

I also want to write more again. My unfinished fic folder has pieces in it than my finished one. It's not good. I ended up dropping out of/flaking on a few fests before I stopped using LJ, which I still feel incredibly guilty about (seriously, so bad) so I don't think I'm going to do any more fests for a while. However, I have the fics I started for some of those, plus a massively, massively overdue fic for [livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat which I am finally working on again! Hopefully, you will see it soon. I'm so sorry it's taken me (checks...) oh god, nearly two years. Oh Christ. Sorry.

Ramblings on mental health and writing )

So, I'm going to be floating around a bit more! Also, I'm looking for a beta now I'm trying to write more, so if you fancy volunteering even just for a short thing, that would be incredible! I'm happy to offer my beta-ing services to anyone as well, should they be required - self-professed grammar nerd here.

Amid my vast amounts of procrastionation, I have somehow found myself starting on a set of character pencil sketches from Harry Potter, and I thought I might as well shove the first few up here. They're quite small and rough, and probably only actually about six centimetres tall, which you can't tell here. For some reason, I am finding Harry impossible to get right - he doesn't look anything like any version of him that I could extrapolate from anything, really. But I'm moderately happy with the Draco, Hermione, and Pansy which are all I have finished so far. Hermione looks a little odd, and also rather downcast (which is funny, because I started with the intention of getting her smiling), Draco looks stretched, and Pansy looks a bit out of proportion. But in general, I'm fairly pleased.

I have been terribly neglectful of LiveJournal lately. Somewhere in the last five months my life has exploded into even more busyness than ever before, and this is from someone who has always done a lot of stuff. My hd-remix is almost finished now (which is still late. Yes, I know), so I should get that sent off in the next few days. And then I just have all those other things to deal with. It's not as though I have to give a presentation tomorrow that I haven't written yet. *sweats nervously*

So after I checked the comm about ten times today, the reveals at [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised were posted.

I received a wonderful fic from [livejournal.com profile] potteresque_ire, Kissed, which I highly recommend to everyone, because it was wonderful and a great gift.

I also wrote Lose Not A Chance To Waken Love for [livejournal.com profile] persephoneapple, which was great fun to write. It features humour, snark, strangely coloured liqueurs, and chickens.

EDIT: There appears to be some very dodgy formatting in this post, for which I do apologise, but am far too tired to fix right now... Sorry.
obliviateamores: (christmas)
You have no idea how happy this makes me. I resolutely force myself not to let the Christmas season begin until the first of December, otherwise it has a tendency to colonise half the year. Also, it REALLY ISN'T CHRISTMAS in October. I wish someone would tell all the shops which play irritating christmas songs that. I have a friend who claims that Christmas begins when it gets properly cold, which is simply ludicrous. He also thinks it's acceptable to eat mince pies in June, though, so what can I say.

Anyway, now it's here, I am incredibly excited. It's not Christmas itself I love so much, even. The week or so around Christmas day means an amount of time spent with my family that I find incredibly hard to tolerate without stabbing someone. I love the carols (by which I mean the proper ones, preferably sung in at least four part harmony, and not the Christmas pop that gets blasted at you all the time). I love the food. I love the fact that it's socially acceptable to eat horrific amounts of incredibly unhealthy stuff. I also like getting presents. I would say I like giving them just as much, but I'd be fooling nobody.

Also, there was Doctor Who. A few thoughts, plus spoilers, under the cut.

Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying the build-up to Christmas :)

I am telling myself that Christmas makes it acceptable to sing out loud when walking down the street.

I have succeeded in killing my phone.

Again.

This is the third time in about nine months, but definitely the most spectacular. I managed to fall in a river with it.
A word of explanation: I have spent the last month in the lovely country of Ireland, visiting family. I did not bring a computer, and the only nearby house which even has WiFi is my uncle's.

It is a rather lovely Victorian hunting lodge, which used to belong to my great-grandparents, and stands on the bank of a river. So, a few days ago, I was standing peacefully on the riverbank, making full use of the WiFi to get back to the internet. I was, at the precise moment in question, typing a comment on a post by [livejournal.com profile] lauren3210, which I regret never managed to get posted. Unfortunately, I managed to slip.

Being my unco-ordinated self, I did not fall gracefully. No. My phone flew out of my hand and into the river, followed shortly by me, flailing madly. I found myself standing almost waist deep on the edge of the river, hunting madly for my phone, which had sunk somewhere nearby. It took me at least five minutes to find it, and it has been sitting in the airing cupboard in a bowl of rice ever since. I dare not retrieve it.

All in all, I am utterly hopeless, and utterly without internet unless I borrow my uncle's computer. I am starting to feel the fanfic deprivation.

In other news, I still haven't finished my fic for the hd_fan_fair fest. It's just got a bit stuck. I would normally just sit down and force myself to write, even if it came out awfully, but I can't really do that at the moment.

Also, Ireland, while one of my favourite places on earth, is horrifically wet. I think my bones are rusting.

So... I know it's a bit late, but I thought I might as well do the kink meme thing.
Stolen from, well, pretty much everyone.

Inspired by the posts by [livejournal.com profile] snowgall and [livejournal.com profile] vaysh.

I thought this quiz looked vaguely interesting, so I thought I'd give it a go...

Amusingly, though it came out second (not sure why??) I have never read an Espionage AU. Though it does sound fun. Any suggestions?

Basically, though, the top eleven or so are pretty surefire hits for me :)

So I know the reveals have been up for a while, but as I have only just been able to get an internet connection, I thought I might as well claim my fic.

I wrote Cell Block, which was for a prompt by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] carowren.

I was amazed by the positive response, so thank you to everyone who has already read and commented on it :)

Prompter: carowren
Title: Cell Block

Everybody go and prompt & sign up for [livejournal.com profile] hd_cliche!

- a low stress, mini-fest celebrating well-loved cliches in the Harry/Draco Fandom!

It's a great fest and I've never written for it before, so I'm very excited this year :)

Title: How Not to Write a Sex Scene
Author: [livejournal.com profile] obliviateamores
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Draco’s leather pants are rather enticing. A badfic parody.
Word Count: ~1000 words
Notes: For the birthday of the most excellent [livejournal.com profile] turtleinatardis. I promise I can actually write. This is, I reinforce, a parody. Epithets are to be used only by the great Homer, clichés should be avoided, men calling each other baby is frankly disturbing, and no metaphors for cock should ever be used. Seriously.

[livejournal.com profile] turtleinatardis, here is the fandom part of your birthday present. I hope the humour appeals.

So I was reading this article, which is a conversation between Neil Gaiman and Kazuo Ishiguro about genre and writing.
They are two of my favourite authors, and if you haven't read anything by them you should go and do so at once :).
Anyway, I had some thoughts:
Gaiman writes almost exclusively fantasy. Fascinating, dark stories with intricate depths. Ishiguro is generally seen as more of a realist. He writes about people; about memory, time and the tricks of perception.
But Ishiguro has been 'moving genres'. His most recent book is set in what is practically a fantasy world. So, does this matter?
Well, to me, not really. What matters is the beauty of the writing and the interest of the plot, themes, and characters. So does it matter if a book is written not only for adults but also for children? As Gaiman says here, not really.
This applies to Gaiman's children's books, but also to things like Harry Potter and Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. People are starting to care less that a book has been aimed at an audience they do not consider themselves part of, and this applies to genre divides such as fantasy as well as Children's/Adults' novels.

Also, there is some interesting stuff about transformative works in there. Including Shakespeare. A reminder to all my fanficcy friends (which is basically all of you): Shakespeare wrote fanfic.
That is what his plays are. We are in excellent company, my friends.

Title:(Excerpt from fic) Of Course
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] obliviateamores
Pairing(s): Draco/Harry
Kink/trope featured:(Here) Glasses!Draco, (Whole fic) First time.
Rating: G (Full fic is NC-17)
Medium: Pencil sketch with digital edits
For Draco's birthday at [livejournal.com profile] dracomalfoy and for [livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat's birthday :)
Notes: *Creeps into view* Um... I am writing a fic for a prompt by [livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat (see below). And I wanted to post it today because HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. But it isn't finished. Sorry. So I decided I'd post the little drawing I did that goes with it. The drawing itself doesn't fill the prompt, but I promise the fic will.

So Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat and I hope you enjoy this. Your fic will be along in a few days. Also, I apologise for not being able to draw noses.

Pairing: Draco paired with either Seamus, Harry or Ron
Kink/trope: First times. FIRST. TIMES.
Additional kinks/tropes: Possibly with Draco in glasses? I kind of love the idea of Draco in glasses -- no, just think about it, he'd look so sexy!
Anything else: *incoherent moaning*

Title: Dear Draco
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] obliviateamores
Pairing(s): Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Kink/trope featured: Epistolary, Drunk!Harry
Rating: NC-17. I think.
Notes: For Draco's birthday party at [livejournal.com profile] dracomalfoy. Prompt by [livejournal.com profile] capitu. This probably wasn’t what you wanted from the prompt, but have a little piece of mostly floof anyways :). It isn’t as smutty as it could be, but I think Harry is a probably a British man who doesn’t like to talk about sex... All spelling mistakes are Harry’s, not mine. Draco doesn’t make spelling mistakes. (Also, I’m covering up for my terrible typing.) I'm a bit shy of posting since nobody else seems to have done so yet but I'm going to jump in anyway.

Title: Swordplay, Chapter 1
Authors:[livejournal.com profile] obliviateamores, [livejournal.com profile] turtleinatardis
Rating: PG-15
Word Count: ~3000 words
Summary: Somehow, Draco Malfoy ends up teaching fencing to the rest of the Eighth Years.
No, he doesn't know why either.
This is a Pureblood Sport! The Muggles just borrowed it!
And it means a lot of innuendo... (Seriously, the whole point is thrusting at people with swords, what do you expect?)
